Chapter 1199: Eight Years Ago, He Died to Save Her, Yet She Forgot Him
Leah woke up in the middle of the night, inexplicably feeling cold, and suddenly woke up, looking at the indoor temperature, which was always constant.
She turned on the light, her hands and feet a bit chilled. The time was three o’clock in the morning, with at least two hours until dawn.
In the phone, there was the last message from Richard Shaw: "I’m home, I’ll bring you breakfast in the morning."
Richard Shaw had sent a goodnight kiss emoji.
Leah got up, pulled open the curtains, and looked at the deep, dark night outside, feeling some suppressed panic in her heart.
Her nerves were perpetually exhausted, once awake, she could not fall asleep again; it was inappropriate to find someone to chat and kill time at this point. So she simply took her phone, turned on the corridor lights of the small villa, went downstairs, found fruits and snacks from the refrigerator, and casually picked a Hollywood blockbuster to watch, planning to fight until dawn.
She was watching a disaster film. Midway, seeing the explosion scene made her head throb painfully; she went pale, went to drink water, closed her eyes, and leaned on the soft sofa. For a moment, her mind was filled with fear as if all five senses were lost after the explosion, so real as if she had really experienced it.
The movie continued playing, and she thought about the nightmare she had last year—an indistinct-faced man, viscous blood, a shattered body, and only the smile was bright.
Her face showed faint pain, her body began to tremble uncontrollably, tears rolled down, wetting the corner of her eye, and she opened her mouth to shout a name she didn’t know: "Eamon Turner."
Eamon Turner, Eamon Turner, Eamon Turner...
That name was like the key to Pandora’s box; once called out, it triggered the deepest memories and images in her mind.
"My name is Eamon Turner, in the future I will be responsible for Madam’s security."
"I have an older brother, I joined the army, he became a bandit, haven’t seen each other in over ten years."
"Everything I told you before was true, my brother’s name is Cornelius Turner." He revealed a final smile and sheltered her under his body, his rugged face was split into countless wounds, blood seeped through her clothes and dripped down.
Cornelius Turner? Eamon Turner? She grasped the fleeting images in her mind, her body convulsed violently, as if returning to the sensation of losing control of her limbs and all senses during the explosion.
Leah was drenched in sweat, not knowing how much time had passed, the pain in her head gradually subsided; she picked up the phone and frantically searched for Cornelius Turner’s number.
The phone rang for a while before someone answered.
Cornelius Turner’s slightly hoarse voice sounded: "Miss?"
Leah’s face turned pale, she asked quietly: "Is the person you honor every year Eamon Turner?"
Hurried breathing could be heard through the phone, Cornelius Turner was silent for a long while, then softly affirmed.
Eight years ago, she had always known that Cornelius Turner honored someone every year, a person whose tombstone bore no name, whom he silently honored without speaking a word. As the deceased had already passed, she didn’t dare ask about his grief, and in a blink, eight years had passed.
Leah’s tears rolled down, she choked back sobs, "I remembered him just now, he said his brother was Cornelius Turner."
Cornelius Turner’s breath paused, he said sorrowfully, "I am sorry to Little Turner."
His voice carried a trace of sobbing. He hadn’t cared for his younger brother, if only he had managed to be in Imperial City at that time, perhaps he could have saved him. The brothers had been apart for over ten years, never to see each other one last time.
"It’s my fault." Leah whispered as she choked back sobs, pain swept from every corner of her body. For eight years, she hadn’t realized she was bearing the burden of blood and lives, the person who died saving her, whom she had forgotten.
